Evanton Wood

Sprung into Action

Added on 25 April 2016

Evanton Community Wood was alive with happy sounds last Saturday (16 April) as the woodland play area was opened at the Spring into Action event. Hector Munro, chair of Kiltearn Community Council, cut the tape and unveiled the wooden Nessie head, carved by sculptor Iain Chalmers, the final element of the play area which has been created by schools, volunteers and the area community payback team, with special funding from the Forestry Commission Community Fund. Hector paid tribute to all involved in this project also to the management group for the good work by the community wood since puchase in 2012.

Time trials of the new circuit proved impossible because of the high numbers involved but all users gave it a big thumbs-up. The other big attraction was the green wood-working  activity which came on the heels of a 2-day training course for group leaders and teachers so there were volunteers on hand to handle the newly made pole lathes, shave horses and other equipment. Over 60 stools were made on the day and some 80 pencils as well as scores of wooden flowers. Hail added a chill to the morning but volunteers were on hand to make pancakes on the fire and provide welcome hot drinks and cake; meanwhile the wood-burning stove provided welcome heat in the woodland cabin.
