Evanton Wood

Forestry demonstration day - A great success

Added on 04 December 2013

The 29th and 30th of November gave local school children and residents the opportunity to visit Evanton Woods and see a number of Forestry practices in action.  In partnership with the Forestry Commission, Evanton Community Wood invited Tarzan and his handler Brian of Highland Horse Logging (tarzan is a comtois horse), lplus ocal chainsaw carver Iain Chalmers and tree cutters from Lairg to come along and demonstrate their skills.

Over 200 children from four local schools attended on the Friday and were treated to seeing owls being carved, 2 large trees being felled (these being classed as dangerous and in need of coming down) and a walk around the new orienteering trail.  Deputy Head Isobel Sutherland of Coulhill primary school said:"this has been a fantastic opportnity for the children to get up close whith things most have only seen on TV.  To do this in a safe and exciting environement has ben so beneficial  not only for the children but also the staff, I can now say I've met Tarzan!"

Saturday was a day for the local community.  Over 100 local residents visited the wood throughout the day to see the various activities.  Hot chocolate was on hand for those needing a drink and also young trees were available for anyone feeling the need for helping with the woodland tree planting programme.

Overall the event proved a huge success so much so that another event with more horses is in the pipeline, watch this space.
